So what are you waiting for, what’s not to like? We would love for you to enjoy what Meredith residents are blessed to enjoy every day.About us:If we build it they will come, or so we hope. My husband and I, after raising 3 kids and seeing them thru 2 tours in Iraq, while I battled cancer went looking for a peaceful, comfortable cottage on its own land because we really needed solitude and some down time. The search began in NH, then Maine and finally Vermont. The closest we found was a cabin in VT with a woodstove and jacuzzi tub, unfortunately it had other cabins all around us, no views and cost $300.00 a night! We stayed for the weekend and talked to the owners about their experience owning cottages. In the mean-time my husband got a job at New Hampton School and while driving around found a 230 year old house with 36 acres and beautiful views that reminded him of his grandfather’s cottage in up-state NY. He had many fond memories being a child there and couldn’t let this house go. Should we? This house was not even insulated and had been a summer camp for 50 years. After much consideration we purchased the old home with dream views and most importantly…land. Then began 3 long years of making it livable. Still, we felt very blessed and enjoyed our views, the peace and quiet, but we never forgot the stress of everything we had suffered and couldn’t forget the many fellow veterans and cancer survivors and wished we could bless them with what we had.Could we combine both the need for eventual retirement income and help others too? Well we owned the land across the street separately, so began the dream … and then the work. A business plan, a budget (how to stay on budget), purchase of an excavator to clear the land & put in a septic, get a loan, draw plans, hire tradesman then do the rest ourselves. After many LEARNING MOMENTS & 2 tireless years of working almost every weekend (my husband worked his full-time job!) many phone calls, tradespeople, bought everything needed to build & furnish the cottage, hubby still did most of the heavy lifting and we both called on anyone we knew for help or knowledge with anything we didn’t already know. Finally, after 2 long years I was finally able to decorate it. We are so GLAD it’s done and we are very proud of what we have accomplished. We hope you like it as much as we do.Actually, you’re helping with our dream to help others just by renting. For every extra $ we can save after deducting costs we hope to put a percent into giving a veteran or cancer survivor some time here for free. Another way You can help us bless others is by giving us good reviews as well as signing our guestbook. But most importantly, we hope you enjoy your stay, please read the cabin companion book and familiarize yourself with helpful tips as we also labeled things and left notes to help. I collected some of our favorite things to do in the area as well as brochures. Please don’t hesitate to call us directly if needed! We thank you in advance for taking good care of our cottage. Please leave comments on the chalk board if anything is needed/wanted, compliments and constructive criticism.Your owners/Hosts,Kirk and Sue Beswick
