But why is this side street named for the man who was Commander of the Allied Forces in World War Two and the President of the United State from 1953 to 1961?The answer is but a few blocks away, Augusta National Golf Club.Dwight Eisenhower came to Augusta in 1948 for the first time for an extended vacation and to recover his health. He claimed it was the best vacation that he had ever had and shortly after he left, he was offered membership in the private club. And so began a love affair. Augusta National became his retreat. The famous Eisenhower Cabin was built in 1953 and was used frequently during and after his Presidency. Ike came to Augusta over forty times in his life and played almost 200 rounds of golf at The National. He developed very close friendships with some of the members who served him as advisors, golf partners and evening bridge players. When in Augusta, Ike and his wife Mamie rarely left the confines of The National. The exception was to attend services at Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church on nearby Walton Way.President Eisenhower died in 1969.
