Centrally located as one the district’s 22 squares, Crawford dates to 1841. It is named after William Harris Crawford, who acted as Secretary of the Treasury in the early 19th century.Crawford Square is small in area compared to other squares, but it is distinctive in a number of ways. It is the only square still bordered with a fence, although all were fenced in the distant past. It boasts a lovely gazebo perfect for picnicking and live music events. It also has a basketball court and a children’s playground. It’s a great destination for a stroll around the neighborhood, a bit of recreation or some relaxing alone time.On an interesting historical note, Crawford Square was the only integrated place where African Americans were welcome during the South’s Jim Crow era. It also retains a cistern, which hearkens back to firefighting’s early days. All the 22 town squares once had one, but only Crawford’s remains.Crawford Coastal is a comfortable walk from Colonial Park Cemetery, which has been a city park since the late 1890s. At that point, no new burials had occurred in the cemetery for several decades.
