This area on the eastern shore stretches from the ocean to the 4,000 foot summit of Kilauea volcano. Because it is directly on the ocean, The Jewel Box has the benefit of being close to great hiking areas nearby while experiencing fresh air quality provided by the trade winds off the Pacific. A few blocks out the front door is the Red Road, one of the most scenic and renowned drives in all of Hawaii, accessing black sand beaches, dense rain forest, and other picturesque vistas. Visitors are likely to spot whales in season, and turtles and spinner dolphins year round. And because of its vast wilderness, the area remains a breeding ground for many birds, including endangered Hawaiian hawks that are frequently spotted near The Jewel Box. A short walk from The Jewel Box is Kehena Black Sand Beach, a secluded (clothing optional) beach, hidden from view from the roadway.A few miles north, you’ll find our newest black sand beach at Isaac Hale Beach Park aka Pohoiki, home to the best surfing in Puna! This beach was created during the 2018 eruption.Two miles south in Kalapana is Uncle Roberts and a bazaar-style market every Wednesday night which hosts live music, and features local artists & handcrafts booths and tons of amazing food vendors. They do have a bar, but you can also BYOB. Get there early to reserve a spot to sit!Nearby in Pahoa, take a stroll through this old mill town with its rows of clapboard shops along a boardwalk, local restaurants and a bakery.
