Description
Cozy and intimate, this gemutlich studio in the iconic Lombardy Hotel is dubbed THE SNUG for its historical Edwardian /Arts & Crafts ambience and efficient use of a small “snug” space. Stained glass, oak paneling, wool rugs, antique furniture and period decor combine for the ideal pied a terre for a single or couple. Business traveler-friendly! King bed, original white-tiled full bath, kitchenette niche, twice daily housekeeping, and gym, make this the perfect sanctuary for your stay in NYC.Welcome to THE SNUG studio of the Lombardy Hotel!William Randolph Hurst, the great media mogul and inspiration for “Citizen Kane” built the gorgeous Lombardy Hotel as a Deco limestone fortress for his mistress, silent film star Marion Davies (the inspiration for “Rosebud”). The Lombardy has been the New York residence of film stars like Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton and almost a century later still feels like a grand New York apartment house. The apartments of the Lombardy are individually owned and decorated co-ops, and this intimate 250s.f. studio, affectionately dubbed THE SNUG, is a historical Midtown gem, the perfect quiet hideaway for your rest, relaxation, and enjoyment.Be very clear: this is a unique old-style hotel room in a 4-star historic hotel with daily housekeeping and many amenities, but it is a small 250s.f. studio with the owner’s unique and inviting decor. The space includes the 9 x 17 bedroom with king bed, an en suite original bathroom (classic Deco style white tile with deep bathtub), 4′ clothing closet, and 3′ kitchenette niche (featuring undercounter refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, and electric kettle).THE SNUG’s period decor and and original fixtures transport you back in time to a New York hotel room from The Great Gatsby or Rules of Civility. It is small, yes, (the king bed fills half the room and doesn’t leave much extra space, so absolutely no more than two people are allowed!) but as it is in the back of the building –on 56th Street facing north– it is insulated from traffic, sirens, and street noise, a much quieter option than rooms that face south overlooking the street. It is extremely rare that you would hear a siren or any construction noise. While the tall oak wainscoting, oriental rugs, brocade drapes, and stained glass are unique to this room, even people with a taste for the modern can appreciate its ergonomic features: a drop-front Edwardian desk offers laptop surface and cabinet storage so you can unpack your clothes and/or store your suitcase in the closet (or underneath the secretary), the wall-mounted 52″ flat-screen TV makes viewing from bed a breeze, and the seating area with two mohair Deco chairs features a coffee table that raises to dining-table height for enjoying your take-out meals and coffee.Your 48″ window faces north and allows ample filtered light, but is not subject to bright direct sunshine–terrific for sleeping in! The Snug is on the 2nd floor, and outside the window is a wide brick terrace (NOT accessible) with it’s oxidized copper roofing detail. No view to speak of, but the insulation from noise is the pay-off.This is your own hotel room in the Lombardy. You have access to all hotel amenities, including 24-hour front desk concierge service, twice daily housekeeping, bell-hop and doorman, lobby waiting area, work-out room/gym facilities, on-site hair salon and seamstress, and on-site coffee house (Ninth Street Espresso) and the world-class American Cut steakhouse.Once in your room, you have your own private bathroom (with blowdryer, shampoo, etc.) , 9 x 17 bedroom with king bed, desk, and seating area, clothing closet (with full length mirror, hangers, ironing board and iron), and kitchenette closet (refrigerator, microwave, kettle, coffeemaker). If you need anything else, just check with the front desk.VALET Parking is available for additional $38 a day; just pull up and leave your car with the doorman and see the front desk to arrange payment.
